AI hype versus reality: What do you think?

Research and Opinions
Time2Future takes a look at the Gartner's AI study 'As a leader, are you AI ready?'

Gartner released a newsletter with some interesting insights on AI.

First of all, this is the already familiar figure of 17-20% - this is how many organizations declare their plans to implement AI tools in their business processes. The actual percentage of implementations is between 2% and 5%. These numbers have been constant for several years.

Why is that? Interesting, isn't it? A mismatch between expectations and reality, unjustified hype without a real technical basis, or simply ignorance about the real capabilities of AI - what it can do and what we should not expect?

The following facts from Gartner's study may help us understand why.

Spectrum between Everyday AI and Game-Changing AI:

Everyday AI is about efficiency gains, automation and optimization, and cost reduction.

Game-changing AI is about changing business models, creating new opportunities and revolutionary products and services based on them.

IT vs. Business:

23% of AI initiatives are coming from IT and CTOs, and about half as many (11%) are coming from business unit leaders. And Gartner believes that CIOs should help decide where and how the organization will use AI.

What is all this about, and what is the main conclusion about the reasons for the gap between expectations and the actual penetration of AI in organizations?

Business leaders are not very interested in automation and optimization, to be more precise - they don't care what tools are used to achieve it, AI is just one of the tools in this case. Business leaders and CFOs are wary of making serious investments in new technologies - game-changing AI requires significant funding.

At the same time, technical leaders are often not interested in creating business products, but they are willing to invest in automation, including AI, and only true enthusiasts with financial resources think about game-changing technologies.

Do these contradictions need to be addressed in some way?

We do not think so. They will resolve themselves. Very rapid revolutionary technological changes always lead to hype, but this will be replaced by real examples of success and the penetration of AI into business. They already are, and this is just the beginning of the journey. That's what we think at Time2Future.
